Linguist Richard Dauenhauer, a former Alaska Poet Laureate, award-winning author and expert in the Tlingit language passed away Tuesday. He was married to Tlingit poet and scholar Nora Marks Dauenhauer. They authored many books together, including the "Classics of Tlingit Oral Literature" series published by the Sealaska Heritage Institute and University of Washington Press. They twice won the American Book Award, among other honors. He taught at the University of Alaska Southeast in the 1980s. UAS assistant professor of Native languages Lance Twitchell called Dauenhauer a "powerhouse," who merged the Tlingit world with the academic world. Twitchell said Dauenhauer's work changed his life and put him on the path he's on. Richard Dauenhauer was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a month ago. He was 72.
