Koahnic Broadcast Corporation

Today on Our Community, Kristen Collins, the Alaska Center Community Organizer and Gayla Hoseth, 2nd Chief of Curyung Tribal Council & Stand for Salmon spokesperson came by KNBA to share a new state holiday.

Each year, August 10th is designated as Alaska Wild Salmon Day.

Collins says this comes after a law was passed that started as House Bill 128 on the 29th Legislature of Alaska in 2016.

Hoseth says Brice Edgmon was the driving force behind the bill, which passed unanimously, as can be viewed on the record: http://www.legis.state.ak.us/basis/get_bill.asp?session=29&bill=HB128

Hoseth says Alaska is only state with a day celebrating salmon points out how central salmon are to Alaskan lives across the state, "We are the only state left, with healthy salmon runs."

Collins says the local celebrations in Anchorage include a Cuddy Park BBQ today from 5:30-9:30, including music by Hanna Yoter Band, yard games and dancing.
