8/4/14 KNBA News - Absentee voting opens today for controversial oil, gas production tax

Absentee voting opens today for the Aug. 19  primary when voters will decide whether to accept or reject an oil and gas production tax, Senate Bill 21, adopted by the state Legislature during the 2013 session. They'll also pick the political party candidates who will move on to the general election for various offices: U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Governor, Lt. Governor, and state Legislature.

Gov. Sean Parnell signed legislation making Nov. 14 Dr. Walter Soboleff Day, honoring the late Tlingit elder.

The centuries-old fishing knowledge of elders from the Upper Kobuk River is being recorded for future generations in a $40,000 project funded by the National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund.  Tribal Manager Virgnia Commack of Ambler says up to 75% of the communities diet can be fish, especially sheefish and salmon, when land harvests are poor.
