Alaska's lone U.S. congressman and senators introduced legislation in the House and Senate to pre-empt states from banning walrus ivory, whale bone and other marine mammal products.  The delegation proposes amending the Marine Mammal Protection Act, or MMPA, through these new bills.

This is a step in the right direction, Eskimo Walrus Commission director Vera Metcalf said.

Alaska won't have two U.S. senators with the same name. Former Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan says he’s dropping out of the Republican primary race challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Sullivan tells KTUU he can best serve Alaskans by working on local and statewide issues. Alaska's junior U.S. Senator and former Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan was elected in 2014.

Sen. Mark Begich concedes, lagging by 6,211 votes with few ballots left to count

With 30,000+ early and absentee ballots still to be counted, the two men in the lead for U.S. Senator for Alaska -- Dan Sullivan -- and for Alaska Governor -- Bill Walker -- are taking steps toward assuming office. Yesterday Sullivan left for U.S. Senate organizational meetings in Washington, D.C. Walker and his campaign partner Byron Mallott have announced their transition team co-chairs: former state Sen. Rick Halford, and Alaska Federation of Natives co-chair Ana Hoffman of Bethel. The Division of Elections will resume tallying votes on Friday, and continue into next week as needed.

Mark Begich, a Democrat, was behind Republican challenger Dan Sullivan in the polls by some five points until last week when Begich pulled ahead by a few points.

As KYUK's Ben Matheson reports, this year's U.S. Senate race in Alaska is shattering spending records, with tens of millions of dollars from outside Alaska going mostly toward TV ads. With less than two months to go before the general election, the two candidates are also seeking an edge on the ground in rural Alaska.

Before the election primary, in which he faced Tea Party candidate Joe Miller, U.S. Sen. candidate Dan Sullivan opposed Ballot Measure Three, which would increases the state's minimum wage by $2 to $9.75 per hour in two years.  His campaign says Sullivan changed his mind after he read the initiative. Sullivan says he still opposes a federal minimum wage increase. His opponent, Sen. Mark Begich, supports a bill in Congress to increase the federal minimum wage to just over $10 an hour.
