Ballot Initiative One would automatically register voters who apply for PFDs
Based on a story by Anne Hillman, Alaska Public Media
Next Tuesday, Alaskans will vote on Ballot Initiative One, which would automatically register eligible individuals to vote when they apply for a Permanent Fund Dividend, unless they opt out. As it is now, a person needs to register by mail or online 30 days before the election. Critics say it’s already easy enough to register, and the new system would cost too much. Proponents say the change could boost voter turnout, and the cost estimates are based on outdated information.
