Elder and leader Robert Marshall, 96, was first president of Ahtna Inc.

Ahtna Athabascan elder and leader Robert Marshall, 96, died Sunday, March 31, in Tazlina, Alaska.

Marshall was born April 13, 1922, in Chitina, Alaska, to Bob and Maude Marshall.

According to a news release, Marshall helped form Ahtna Incorporated and served as its first president. He also helped form the Copper River Native Association.

In the release, Ahtna Inc. chair Ken Johns says, “Robert laid a solid foundation for Ahtna to thrive as a company and we are forever grateful for the strong leadership, traditional knowledge and guidance he gave over his lifetime.”

Marshal also served with the Alaska Federation of Natives, RurAL CAP, and the Native Village of Tazlina. He retired from the Alaska Department of Transportation after 40 years of service. In 2013, he was awarded the AFN Elder of the Year Award.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Legacy Chapel, Legacy Funeral Home-Heritage Chapel at Angelus, 440 E. Klatt Road, Anchorage; and also 2 p.m Friday, April 5, at Glennallen Chapel.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at Glennallen Chapel. Burial will be in the family cemetery located at 14 mile in Kenny Lake. Dinner and potlatch will be at Kluti-Kaah Memorial Hall.
