10/3/13 Federal government shutdown continues; Alaska health care providers embrace Affordable Care Act implementation

Anchorage, AK – The opening of a market for buying health insurance will make it easier for the 140,000 Alaskans without health insurance to get coverage, according to health care providers. Several organizations have stepped up to help people navigate the process of buying insurance, getting an exemption, or showing that they are already covered. Alaska Natives and Native Americans can get a lifetime exemption. Officials advise the public to take their time as they go through various health insurance options. The Affordable Care Act requires the purchase of health insurance. Those who remain uninsured in 2014 face fines of $95 per person, or up to $285 per family, or 1% of t the family income, whichever is greater.
