Anchorage, AK – A fire that closed down the Parks Highway Wednesday night is larger than expected.
The state of Alaska is putting $35 million into a residential facility at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, where the federal government pays 100% of Medicaid costs. Patients won't have to stay at other facilities, where the state picks up half the tab.
Villagers are asking sports fishermen to share the sacrifice of closures of commercial fishing on the Kanektok River near Quinhagek, to save future runs of salmon. Sports fishng guides say they'll limit customers to catch-and-release of kings.
A Polynesian celebration set for Saturday will include a parade, dancers, music, and food from several South Pacific cultures.
Federal land managers are looking for people with experience in the Arctic to serve on the Science Technical Advisory Committee.
