Murkowski finds EPA criticism of Pebble Mine ‘substantial’

The Environmental Protection Agency issued harsh assessments of the proposed Pebble Mine, and they’ve made an impression on Lisa Murkowski. But the senator says her powers are limited.

For years, Murkowski has stayed neutral on the mine itself while defending the permitting process, so her recent statements are uncharacteristically pointed.

Alaska won't have two U.S. senators with the same name. Former Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan says he’s dropping out of the Republican primary race challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Sullivan tells KTUU he can best serve Alaskans by working on local and statewide issues. Alaska's junior U.S. Senator and former Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan was elected in 2014.

In 2009-2010, Alaska ranked among the top 10 states in several categories of illegal drug use, something law enforcement and court officials would like to change, but not at the expense of Constitutional rights. That's the message participants heard Wednesday at the "Reclaim Alaska: 2014 Substance Abuse Summit" hosted in Anchorage by the Aleutian-Pribilof Islands Association. Police dogs, searches, anonymous telephone tip lines, and employees' consents to searches are all useful tools in interdicting illicit drugs.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski's lawyer has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Sen. Mark Begich, demanding he stop using her image in his TV ads. She says it implies her support, and she wants a Republican to win. He says the ad stating they vote the same 80% of the time is accurate, and he will continue to use accurate ads.

The Republican primary is heating up and getting ugly, as candidates Dan Sullivan and Mead Treadwell work to get votes in the Aug. 19 primary.

Residents of the Funny River road area who had been evacuated were able to move back home Tuesday, but remain on evacuation alert in case they need to leave again. Rain is dampening fuel sources for the massive fire.
