The chief justice of the Alaska Supreme Court says he may need to reduce court hours and furlough employees to meet budget cuts anticipated for the coming year. In his State of the Judiciary Address, Chief Justice Craig Stowers told a joint session of the Legislature the court system took a $3.4 million cut in its budget for this year.

Alaskans get their first chance tonight (Thursday) to tell legislators what they think of the centerpiece of Gov. Bill Walker's fiscal plan for the state.

The Senate State Affairs Committee will begin hearing public testimony at 5:30 p.m. on Senate Bill 128, which would direct $3.3 billion annually in Alaska Permanent Fund earnings and other state funds to the state budget.

Alaska's Shellfish hatcheries are worried that they may have to shut down their operations like hatcheries further south did when waters got too acidic to grow healthy shellfish. Willey Evans, a researcher with the Hakai Institute in British Columbia is working with Aleutic Pride shellfish hatchery in Seward.

The Alaska legislative session started yesterday (Jan. 19) in Juneau. Legislative leaders are seeking to strike a conciliatory tone at the start of what could be a contentious session, as the state grapples with an estimated $3.5 million budget deficit amid low oil prices.
