FAQs about ANYMI

  • What is ANYMI?
The Alaska Native Youth Media Institute (ANYMI) is a unique opportunity for Alaska Native and Native American students interested in media careers to participate in eight intensive days of training taught by top media professionals.

  • What will I learn?
ANYMI students will receive an introduction to careers in radio/audio production for broadcast over non-web-based-terrestrial towers and web-based systems. In addition to lectures from leading media practitioners, ANYMI offers hands-on training sessions in radio production, announcing, writing, editing and mixing feature stories, and internet technology. Students will complete a radio feature that will be broadcast on KNBA and made available on this site. Students will also get a close up look at the media industry through tours of local newspapers and television and radio stations, and will be introduced to life on a college campus.

  • Where will I stay?
ANYMI students usually stay together in dorms on the campus of Alaska Pacific University. Twenty-four hour adult supervision is provided during the entire Institute including overnight, in-dorm supervision.

  • Why was ANYMI Created?
Media is a powerful force and can influence our perceptions of people and events. In addition, media is a tool that can be used to preserve our cultures and strengthen our communities. Yet there are fewer Natives in media careers than any other ethnic group. ANYMI was created in 1991 to introduce young Alaska Natives to careers in media at a time when they are making decisions regarding college and fields of study. The goal of ANYMI is to increase the number of Natives working in the state media to ensure that Native voices are included in important discussions.

ALASKA NATIVE YOUTH MEDIA INSTITUTE
Each summer since 1992, the KBC Training Center has conducted the week-long Alaska Native Youth Media Institute in Anchorage. For each Institute, more than a dozen Native high school students are selected from throughout the state to receive hands-on instruction in media. Some of the country's best Native media professionals guide the students through writing, recording, and producing audio for radio broadcast and Internet distribution. By program's end, the students produce a radio feature program that is offered for broadcast by Native radio stations across the country.
