Fundraiser to benefit family of 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr

A community fundraiser will be held to benefit the family of Ashley Johnson-Barr. The 10-year-old was found dead after having gone missing for eight days in Kotzebue.

One of the organizers, Yaari Walker said the event will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 23, 2018) at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

"So with this unfortunate event Ashley Johnson-Barr has brought the community together in a very strong and beautiful way,” Walker said.

Indian tacos and water or soda will be for sale. There will also be a raffle and a 50/50 drawing. Participants are encouraged to wear purple.

"It's not about how much money we give, how much money we have raised, it's about coming together in unity and helping and supporting the family, that's what it's about: to show them love and respect, because that's what they need right now -- love, and respect and support."

The event will also feature various dance groups.

Johnson-Barr was last seen playing near a park in Kotzebue about 5:30 p.m. September 6th. Peter Wilson is being held on charges that he provided false information to a federal investigator.

According to the criminal complaint, authorities tracked the girl’s cell phone as well as interviewed family members and other possible witnesses. While interviewing Wilson, authorities say the 41-year-old gave false information.

Arraignment is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 21. Wilson is in custody at Cook Inlet Pretrial in Anchorage.
