Native Word of the Day is an audio archive of words and short phrases demonstrating the richness and variety of Native languages spoken in the US.

These recordings are often made in partnership with other Native American/Alaska Native radio stations.

Nacarpiaq by Chuna McIntyre
Modeled by Vernon Chimegalrea

To date, KBC staff have recorded speakers of Yupik (Yukon Delta, AK), Jicarilla Apache (Arizona), Athabascan (Interior Alaska), Navajo (Arizona/New Mexico), Tsimpsean (Southeast Passage, AK), Potawatomi (Upper Midwest), Ojibway (Northeast), Tlingit (Southeast Alaska), Mitchif (North Dakota), Inupiaq (Alaska's North Coast), Aleut (Aleutian Chain), and Siberian Yupik (St. Lawrence Island, AK). This work is ongoing, pending funding.

In November 1999, radio stations across the country incorporated Native Word of the Day into their program schedule in observance of Native Heritage Month.

Native Word of the Day can be heard on KNBA 90.3 FM each weekday at 8 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. Or you can hear today's word by clicking on the link at the top of the page.
